Those with the old-school mindset of SEO still look at link building as a numbers game. If you ask enough people for a link, you’ll get a link or two in return. But link building today isn’t about asking enough people, it’s about engaging with the right people.
So where do you engage?
Start with the influencers. Get on social media and jump into conversations you can add value to. Reply to comments shared on Twitter, Facebook, blog posts, etc. Seek to build quality relationships, making sure your interactions are thoughtful and add value to the conversation.
Just be sure you don’t act like a fanboy or are always trying to promote your own content. All of our comments should be about keeping the conversation going, not getting them to your site.
As you build genuine relationships through these comments, those you are engaging with will figure out who you are and what you do, which will eventually lead to quality links back to your site. Yes, it’s the long play, but it’s going to net you more valuable links than you’d get by spamming people with link building emails.
